This is a great walk that I led on a Wednesday in November and I think that it would be good to now offer it as a Sunday walk. It is a circular route taking in woods, views and historic connections. Lunch will be in Westerham where there is a choice of cafes, tea rooms and pubs. Please bring a snack to tide you over as lunch will be more than halfway on the way.

Meet in the area around the Carpenters Arms pub and the church at the junction of Kent Hatch Road B269 and Moorhouse Road, Limpsfield Chart. (There are several woodland car parks in the area, and to avoid confusion, I suggest that we meet near the pub and move cars if necessary).

Distance and Terrain:

9 miles. Moderate, some stiles and there is an ascent or two.

We begin our walk as the sun sets low over the Burpham Bushlands, trekking north we following the edge of the wetlands, later crossing over the top of the mighty Portsmouth Road we soon find ourselves on the banks of the River Wey. Walking silently along the river’s edge disturbed only by the occasional owl’s hoot we discover a woodland path, following this we emerge out of the dense foliage to be confronted by a huge lake shimmering in the moonlight. Here we will have our first encounter with flying bats swarming over the lake. Following along the lakes edge we later turn on to a boardwalk taking us through the fenlands under starry skies till we meet the River Wey again. At this point we view even larger bats caught in the beams of our torches. Resuming our walk we find a tunnel back under the mighty Portsmouth Road and to the safety of the Spectrum game lodge and a well-earned drink at the bar, phew!
