Walk Programme

Sat 18 Aug 2018: ISLE OF WIGHT FISHBOURNE TO ST HELENS (8miles)

Meet walk leader Nigel at the ferry terminal by 10.30am. He will then see if we have either 10 or more under 60’s or seniors to consider obtaining a group discount. We will then book in as foot passengers on the car ferry for the 11.00 am ferry to Fishbourne returning on the 18.47pm passenger ferry from Ryde (not Fishbourne). You can come back earlier but it guarantees a space if the ferry is busy. The return ferry costs are adults £19.80 or Seniors £14.90.
On arrival we will walk to the nearby Quarr Abbey to have tea and coffees at the café in the grounds of the famous monastery. Then onwards on the scenic coastal path passing Ryde and the picturesque village of Seaview enjoying great views over the Solent and have a picnic or cafe lunch on the way to eventually finish at St Helens. At the end we will get the bus back to Ryde where we will get the passenger ferry to Portsmouth.
If you are coming by car to Portsmouth, you can park your car at the long stay car park directly opposite the car ferry terminal. It’s £10 for 24 hours, or preferably park in Gun Wharf Quays car park nearby only £8 when showing your ferry ticket on your return. Do not use the Park and Ride as last bus back is 19.15pm
If coming by train travel to Portsmouth Harbour Station, on arrival do not follow the I.O.W passenger ferry signs but exit the station on to the road outside called The Hard turn right and follow the road into St Georges Road, then right again into Gunwharf Road signed IOW Car Ferry or if you visit Gunwharf Keys shopping centre take the ten-minute walk following the Millennium Promenade walkway from the Spinnaker Tower heading south (look for chain motif set into the path) to the IOW car ferry terminal on Gunwharf Road.
For both methods of travel, we highly recommend you print off all the details and a map from Streetmap.co.uk by clicking on the green highlighted grid ref on the SABRE walks programme

We start outside the visitor centre at the RSPB nature reserve at Pulborough Brooks, but try not to get too distracted by the delights of the shop and café as we will set off promptly at 11am, descending a gentle woodland trail with glimpses of highland cattle grazing. We then meander along a quiet country lane until we come to Parham Park, an estate dating from Tudor times. After pausing for a few educational factoids, we cross the deer park, admiring the historical Dove Cote en route, and enter the picturesque village of Cootham where we stop for lunch at The Crown. In the afternoon we walk across the Gliding Club’s airfield, keeping well to the side of the runway, and then along narrow countryside tracks to come out by the Golf Club. Crossing the road, we are treated to a taste of Africa as we look out over the ponds of Pulborough Brooks resembling bush watering holes shimmering in the hot Sussex sunshine (hot sunshine not guaranteed but let's be optimistic) and teeming with bird life. We then climb over a stile into a field of horses and continue through the fields until we find ourselves back at the RSPB reserve, where we can justifiably indulge in a slice of homemade cake in the café knowing we have walked 7 miles.
